Marriage Visa Assistance helps foreign spouses of Nepali citizens understand the document and application steps for Nepal’s Non-Tourist Marriage Visa. The Department of Immigration (DOI) handles the application and makes the decision. Immigration Nepal is an independent advisory service, not a government office, and cannot issue a visa or determine eligibility.

Who can apply for a Marriage Visa?

DOI lists this visa for a foreign national married to a Nepali citizen. The marriage must be evidenced by the registration documents DOI accepts. DOI’s FAQ says Nepali origin alone is insufficient: the spouse must be a Nepali citizen with a Nepali passport. Confirm the spouse’s current status with DOI, especially in a dual-nationality situation. Marriage does not guarantee eligibility or issuance. The Nepali spouse is ordinarily expected to attend with the applicant for each application or renewal. DOI describes a specific alternative when the Nepali spouse is abroad and the applicant is staying with the spouse’s family: the applicant must provide a marriage registration certificate registered at the District Administration Office and a relationship certificate issued by the relevant local government that identifies the relationship to the in-laws; one in-law must appear in person at DOI. Confirm that this exception fits your circumstances before relying on it. A Marriage Visa is different from a Relationship Visa, which is for qualifying relatives of a Nepali citizen, and from a dependent visa linked to another foreign national’s visa. Ask DOI to confirm the correct category if the foreign national’s relationship is not as the Nepali citizen’s spouse.

Marriage Visa documents

DOI’s published guidance and immigration office service information identify these core items: - The applicant’s valid passport and online application; prepare a copy of the latest Nepal visa if one has been issued.

  • A marriage registration certificate issued by the District Administration Office or District Court.
  • The Nepali spouse’s citizenship certificate.
  • The Nepali spouse’s physical presence at DOI for verification, unless the stated in-law exception applies and DOI confirms the alternate evidence. For a marriage registered abroad, an immigration office’s published service checklist says verification by the respective embassy is required. Confirm the current verification, translation, and format requirements with DOI and the relevant embassy before submitting the original certificate. If applying through the in-law exception, also confirm the local-government relationship certificate requirements and bring the attending in-law’s identification as directed by DOI. These are preparation points, not a guarantee that the file is complete. DOI may require supporting evidence for the specific application. Check its current instructions for a first application or renewal and do not assume that a foreign certificate or a copy will be accepted without the specified verification.

How the process works

  • Confirm the visa category. Check that the applicant is applying as the foreign spouse of a Nepali citizen and establish whether this is an initial application or renewal.
  • Check the document and attendance rules. Review DOI’s Marriage Visa information. If the marriage was registered abroad or the spouse cannot attend, confirm the applicable evidence and exception with DOI before booking an appointment.
  • Complete the online application. Follow the current DOI application instructions and prepare the passport, marriage certificate, citizenship certificate, latest visa copy if applicable, and any supporting records requested.
  • Attend DOI verification. The applicant and Nepali spouse should attend as directed. If seeking the in-law exception, the applicant should confirm the required local relationship certificate and have the relevant in-law attend. DOI assesses the application and decides whether to issue a visa.
  • Check the visa conditions. Verify the issued period, fees, re-entry conditions, and renewal date directly with DOI. Its FAQ describes a first issuance of up to six months and later issuance of up to one year; duration and charges are subject to current official instructions.

Work and stay limits

A Marriage Visa alone does not authorize work. DOI says a holder may work only after obtaining the required work and labour permit. A person planning to take employment should confirm the Non-Tourist (Working) Visa and Non-Nepalese Work Permit steps with the responsible authorities before starting work. A Marriage Visa is temporary; it is not permanent residence. The visa holder must follow the conditions and expiry date on the visa and confirm renewal requirements with DOI.

How Immigration Nepal can help

We can help organize application information, review documents for completeness against published guidance, and explain which steps to confirm with DOI. We cannot issue a visa, make a government decision, collect government charges as an authority, or promise eligibility, approval, or processing time. For document-preparation help, tell us where the marriage was registered, whether this is a first application or renewal, and whether the Nepali spouse can attend. Contact Immigration Nepal to discuss independent assistance.

Eligibility

  • The Marriage Visa route is for a foreign national married to a Nepali citizen, subject to Department of Immigration review.

Frequently asked questions

Does marriage to a Nepali citizen guarantee a Marriage Visa?

No. Marriage is the basis for applying, but the Department of Immigration reviews the evidence and decides whether to issue the visa. Eligibility, duration, and approval are not guaranteed.

Does the Nepali spouse need to attend?

Ordinarily, yes. DOI says the Nepali spouse should accompany the applicant each time. Its FAQ describes a specific case where the spouse is abroad and the applicant is staying with in-laws; a qualifying local relationship certificate and an in-law’s in-person attendance are required. Confirm the exception with DOI.

What documents are usually needed?

Published guidance lists the applicant’s passport and online application, marriage registration certificate, and Nepali spouse’s citizenship certificate. Prepare the latest Nepal visa copy if applicable. DOI may request supporting documents.

Can I work while holding a Marriage Visa?

No. The Department says Marriage Visa holders cannot work, paid or unpaid, without the required work approval and labour authorization. Confirm the separate working visa and permit process before accepting employment.

How long is a Marriage Visa issued for?

The Department’s current FAQ says a first issuance may be up to six months and later issuances up to one year. The Department determines the visa issued in an individual case; confirm the current period and renewal rules directly with DOI.

Can I apply if our marriage was registered abroad?

An immigration office checklist says a foreign marriage registration must be verified by the respective embassy. Confirm the current verification, translation, and document-format requirements with DOI and that embassy before applying.

General information only. Requirements depend on the facts of each case and can change, so confirm the current position before filing.
