NRN Card Application Coordination helps applicants prepare for a Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) identity card application through Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). The official process has separate online forms and document lists for a foreign citizen of Nepali origin and a Nepali citizen residing abroad. Choosing the right category matters because the evidence differs; Immigration Nepal can help organize the application, but MOFA alone reviews and decides it.
Which NRN category may apply?
MOFA describes a foreign citizen of Nepali origin as a person who, or whose parent or grandparent, was a Nepali citizen and who later acquired citizenship of a country outside SAARC. A Nepali citizen residing abroad is described as a Nepali citizen who has lived abroad for at least two years for a profession, occupation, business, or employment, subject to stated exceptions including residence in a SAARC member country, certain government diplomatic assignments, and study abroad. These are official descriptions, not a guarantee that an individual qualifies. Ask MOFA to confirm how the definition applies to your circumstances.
Documents to prepare
MOFA publishes distinct document lists. Use the list for the applicant’s category and confirm current formats, originals, copies, and any additional evidence with the Ministry before attending.
Foreign citizen of Nepali origin
- Evidence of citizenship in the country where the applicant resides.
- Proof that the applicant renounced Nepali citizenship; MOFA asks applicants to bring the original and a photocopy.
- The citizenship certificate number and district for a Nepali parent or grandparent, or other evidence showing that ancestor was a Nepali citizen.
- If applicable, business registration documents for a business operated abroad, or evidence of employment abroad.
- Three recent passport-size photographs, as listed by MOFA.
Nepali citizen residing abroad
- Copy of the Nepali citizenship certificate and Nepali passport.
- If applicable, business registration documents for a business operated abroad, or evidence of profession or employment abroad.
- For employment with an international organization, appointment documentation and evidence the applicant is currently employed there.
- Three recent passport-size photographs, as listed by MOFA. MOFA’s page also links to separate online forms for these two applicant types and a separate renewal form. Do not assume that this application checklist covers renewal, a lost card, or another NRN-related request; verify the relevant instructions for that request.
How application coordination works
- Identify the correct applicant track. Compare your citizenship history and residence circumstances with MOFA’s descriptions. If they do not clearly fit, request clarification from MOFA.
- Complete the official online form. MOFA directs applicants to its NRN application portal and provides separate forms for foreign citizens of Nepali origin and Nepali citizens residing abroad. Enter accurate details and retain the submission record.
- Prepare category-specific evidence. Organize the documents listed for your category and flag missing or inconsistent information for clarification. For foreign citizens of Nepali origin, bring both the original proof of renunciation and a photocopy.
- Arrange the Ministry visit. MOFA asks applicants to call its published contact number after applying to discuss questions and arrange an appropriate visit time. Follow its current instructions about appointment details and access to Singha Durbar.
- Submit documents and follow official directions. MOFA checks the submitted records and advises on the next steps, including any applicable government payment. Confirm current charges and payment instructions directly with the Ministry; Immigration Nepal does not collect government fees as an authority.
What our coordination covers
Immigration Nepal is an independent immigration assistance and advisory service, not a government office. We can help you understand MOFA’s published category distinctions, organize a document checklist for your stated circumstances, and prepare questions to resolve with the Ministry. We do not issue NRN cards, determine eligibility, accept government fees on MOFA’s behalf, or provide formal legal representation. MOFA may request further evidence or give updated instructions, and no outcome or processing time is guaranteed. Official requirements and procedures can change. Before submitting personal records or traveling to the Ministry, confirm the live form, document requirements, appointment arrangements, and payment instructions with MOFA. To discuss independent preparation support, contact Immigration Nepal.
