Press accreditation and a visa are separate steps

Foreign journalists may need to coordinate press-related services and immigration paperwork. The Department of Information and Broadcasting (DoIB) citizen charter lists services for foreign journalists that include press representative and temporary press representative certificates, journalist identity cards, renewals, and a recommendation for a non-tourist visa. This is DoIB's published service description; a private consultancy is not an accrediting body or government recommender.

A press credential or recommendation and a visa are not interchangeable. DoIB handles the press credential and recommendation process described in its charter. The responsible immigration authority decides visa applications. A media assignment, employer letter, accreditation request, or recommendation should not be treated as approval to enter, remain, work, report, film, or access a location. Confirm planned activities with the relevant government offices.

Immigration Services Nepal is a private administrative consultancy. We can organize records, explain the published process, coordinate translation logistics, and prepare questions for official appointments. We are not a government office, law firm, media accreditor, or employer. We cannot issue a press pass, secure a recommendation, provide legal or media advice, authorize work or access, or guarantee a visa, renewal, timeline, or other result.

Who may find this service useful

This service is for foreign journalists or press representatives and commissioning media organizations coordinating a proposed assignment in Nepal. It may also help a journalist already in Nepal preparing to ask about renewal or a new application. Official bodies decide whether a person or assignment meets their criteria and what documents apply. Commissioning organizations should confirm their role and any institutional correspondence directly with DoIB.

DoIB's citizen charter describes a foreign journalist process involving an organization's recommendation, passport and visa copies, a recommendation from the relevant embassy or consulate, photographs, and a quarterly work progress report. This list relates to the DoIB service in that charter; it is not a universal visa checklist. Ask DoIB for current, case-specific instructions.

How our coordination works

  1. Understand the assignment. We discuss the journalist's location and Nepal immigration status, commissioning organization, proposed activity, and whether this is an initial request or renewal. This identifies questions for confirmation; it is not an eligibility decision.
  2. Separate the official processes. We map questions for DoIB about press credentials and any non-tourist visa recommendation, and questions for the immigration authority about the visa application or renewal. Authorities confirm procedures and decide requests.
  3. Check current instructions. We compare the applicant's records with instructions from the responsible office. We do not treat an example or old checklist as universal; follow the office's current direction.
  4. Organize records and translations. With the applicant's direction, we can sort copies, note missing information, coordinate translations, and prepare an appointment or inquiry list. Applicants remain responsible for accurate statements and authentic records.
  5. Prepare for submission and follow-up. We help prepare questions about submission, originals, payment, collection, renewal timing, and activity limits. The applicant or commissioning organization follows the official channel unless the authority permits another arrangement.
  6. Review the official response. We can organize next administrative steps based on the response. Only the government office can confirm whether a credential, recommendation, visa, or renewal has been granted and its conditions.

Before you make plans

The DoIB charter distinguishes press certificates and journalist identity cards from a non-tourist visa recommendation. Treat the recommendation as its own official step, not as the visa itself. Ask the immigration authority to confirm the category, current application or renewal requirements, fees, submission method, timing, and permitted activities for the individual case. This page does not quote changeable fees or processing times, or provide a fixed visa checklist.

Do not begin reporting, paid work, filming, or travel to a restricted or controlled location based only on a pending request or press credential. Confirm any separate authorization with the responsible authorities. Immigration Services Nepal does not provide media accreditation, access, employment, or legal representation.

Frequently asked questions

Does Immigration Services Nepal issue a press card or visa recommendation?

No. DoIB's citizen charter lists press credential and recommendation services for foreign journalists. The department decides those requests. We can organize information and prepare questions, but cannot issue or promise either item.

Is a press credential the same as a press visa?

No. The citizen charter describes press credentials separately from a non-tourist visa recommendation. Confirm the press process with DoIB and the visa process with the immigration authority.

Can you give me the complete list of documents for every journalist?

No universal checklist is published here. The relevant offices should confirm current documents for the specific applicant, assignment, and request.

Can I renew a visa through this service?

We can help organize records and questions for an official renewal request. The immigration authority decides availability, requirements, and outcome. Ask it about timing and current status.

Does a press visa authorize every kind of reporting or paid work?

This service does not determine permitted activities. Confirm visa conditions and any separate permissions with the responsible authorities before beginning an activity.

What should the commissioning organization prepare?

DoIB's charter refers to an organization recommendation in the foreign journalist process. Contact DoIB to confirm the current format, signatory, supporting records, and whether an embassy or consulate recommendation applies.
