Research Visa Assistance helps foreign researchers understand Nepal’s Study Visa requirements and prepare the researcher-specific documents listed by the Department of Immigration. Research is handled under the Study Visa category; Immigration Nepal can help organize information and identify questions for the authorities, but cannot issue a visa or guarantee eligibility, approval, or timing.

Who this assistance is for

This service is for foreign nationals planning research in Nepal through a Nepali academic institution, such as a university. The Department of Immigration describes the Study Visa as covering academic and non-academic study and research. Its published guidance calls for a recommendation from the Ministry of Education and adds two documents for researchers: an offer or appointment letter from a Nepali academic institution and a general agreement between the Nepali and foreign academic institutions.

Teaching or other paid work should not be assumed to be covered by a research arrangement. The Department’s FAQ says employment is prohibited for Study Visa holders except those holding the visa for teaching. Researchers who will also teach, be employed, receive compensation, or undertake another activity should confirm the correct visa and any separate work permissions with the relevant government offices before beginning that activity.

Researcher documents to prepare

Start with the documents the Department of Immigration publishes for Study Visa applications and its additional researcher requirements. These currently include:

  • A Ministry of Education recommendation letter.
  • An offer or appointment letter from a Nepali academic institution, such as a university.
  • A general agreement between the Nepali academic institution and the academic institution abroad.
  • The online Study Visa application form.
  • The original university or college admission receipt, where applicable to the application.
  • A recent bank statement showing sufficient funds, as required by the Department’s published checklist.
  • Copies of the passport and latest Nepal visa, if the applicant is already in Nepal.
  • For accompanying spouse or children applying as dependants, marriage and birth certificates as applicable.

The Department’s public list combines general Study Visa requirements with researcher-specific items. It does not explain every research arrangement or specify a single format for the institutional agreement. Confirm whether an agreement, research proposal, translations, certified copies, or any extra supporting records are needed for your case with the Ministry of Education, the host institution, and the Department of Immigration. Do not rely on an old or third-party checklist as a substitute for current instructions.

How the application generally proceeds

  1. Confirm the host arrangement. Agree on the research activity and institutional relationship with the Nepali academic institution. Ask the host institution what it needs to issue the offer or appointment letter and enter into the general agreement.
  2. Check the recommendation route. Confirm the current Ministry of Education recommendation process, required format, and supporting documents. The Ministry’s recommendation is a government requirement; a host institution’s letter alone is not the visa.
  3. Assemble the researcher and Study Visa documents. Prepare the offer or appointment letter, institutional agreement, recommendation, online application, and the other documents applicable to your circumstances. Ensure names, passport details, and institutional information match across records.
  4. Submit to the Department of Immigration. Follow the Department’s current Study Visa application instructions and provide any requested original documents. Immigration reviews the application and decides whether to issue the visa.
  5. Confirm the issued conditions. Check the visa category and permitted period shown by Immigration. Ask the authorities about renewal, re-entry, dependants, or any planned change in research activity before relying on assumptions.

Important limits and planning points

A recommendation or institutional invitation does not guarantee that a visa will be granted. The Department of Immigration controls visa decisions and may request further information. Requirements can depend on the applicant’s location, existing Nepal visa, research arrangement, and accompanying family members. Confirm current document formats, submission instructions, fees, and any applicable period directly with the responsible authorities; this page does not quote those changeable details.

Immigration Nepal is an independent immigration assistance and advisory service, not a Government of Nepal office, university, or visa-issuing authority. We can help review the information you provide, organize the applicable documents, and explain which questions should be confirmed with the Ministry, host institution, or Immigration. We do not issue recommendations, collect government visa fees, provide formal legal representation, or promise an outcome or processing time.

Contact Immigration Nepal to discuss your research arrangement and the document-preparation support you need.

What additional documents does a researcher need?

The Department of Immigration lists an offer or appointment letter from a Nepali academic institution and a general agreement between academic institutions in Nepal and abroad as additional documents for researchers. Confirm current formats and any case-specific additions with the responsible offices.

Yes. The Department of Immigration’s published Study Visa checklist includes a recommendation letter from the Ministry of Education. Confirm the current recommendation procedure and documents directly with the Ministry and your host institution.
