Study Visa Assistance is for foreign nationals planning to study in Nepal, including students in academic or non-academic programs. Nepal’s Department of Immigration (DOI) also identifies research and certain teaching activity under the study visa category. A Nepal study visa is issued by DOI following the applicable recommendation and application requirements; Immigration Nepal is an independent advisory service and cannot issue visas or guarantee a recommendation, eligibility, approval, or processing time.

Who may use the study visa route?

DOI describes study visas for foreign students pursuing academic or non-academic study and research in Nepal, and for teachers or professors involved in academic work on recommendation from the concerned government agency.

The recommendation process varies by level. The Ministry of Education and Sports publishes guidance for foreign students in school-level study and higher education. Its current FAQ calls for institution and government education-office recommendations for school-level cases; higher-education cases proceed with the relevant university’s recommendation.

A student visa does not permit paid or unpaid work. Teaching is a distinct situation with additional approvals, including work-related permissions; do not begin teaching or other work unless the responsible authorities have confirmed and issued the necessary permissions.

Documents to prepare

DOI’s published study visa information lists the following core items for an application:

  • Online visa application completed through the current DOI process.
  • Original university or college admission receipt.
  • Recommendation letter from the Ministry of Education (the wording used on DOI’s checklist).
  • Recent bank statement showing sufficient funds. DOI specifies a statement from the latest week; confirm the evidence required for the individual case.
  • Passport copy and copy of the applicant’s latest Nepal visa, if applicable.

For a student’s spouse or children applying as dependents, DOI lists marriage and birth certificates. The Ministry’s current FAQ also lists supporting records that vary by study level, including school or university recommendations, passport and visa copies, a photograph and personal details, a home-country no-objection letter, and proof of admission and payment. For the school-level recommendation route, the FAQ currently specifies a local bank statement showing USD 3,000 for the student and USD 2,000 for each dependent. Confirm the current checklist and financial evidence with the Ministry before applying.

Researchers and teachers should confirm their additional evidence separately. DOI lists an offer or appointment letter from a Nepali academic institution and a general agreement between the Nepali and overseas academic institutions for researchers. For teaching cases, its FAQ lists a Ministry of Education recommendation, a Department of Labour and Occupational Safety work permit, a Ministry of Home Affairs work agreement, an appointment letter, tax clearance certificate, passport and visa copies, and the online study application. These are case-specific routes, so confirm the current requirements before filing.

How the application generally works

  1. Confirm the correct category. Identify whether the purpose is academic or non-academic study, research, teaching, or a dependent application. Ask DOI if the circumstances do not fit the published description.
  2. Obtain the education recommendation. Follow the Ministry of Education and Sports’ current directions for your level of study and institution. The Ministry, university, and relevant education offices—not Immigration Nepal—decide whether to issue their recommendations.
  3. Assemble the case-specific documents. Match the current DOI list to the student’s circumstances, including admission evidence, financial evidence, passport and visa copies, and any dependent records. Researchers and teachers should confirm their separate supporting documents and permissions.
  4. Complete the DOI application. Submit the online application and follow the Department’s current instructions for presenting originals, payment, and any in-person verification.
  5. Follow the Department’s decision and visa conditions. DOI decides whether to issue the visa and its duration. The Department’s published information describes a maximum duration of one year, subject to the recommendation or length of study; confirm the current term and renewal date directly with DOI.

How Immigration Nepal can assist

We can help you understand the published steps, organize documents, and identify questions to raise with the Ministry, your institution, and DOI. We are not a government office, do not issue or approve visas, and cannot make official recommendations or collect government charges as an authority. Final requirements and decisions remain with the responsible government agencies.

If you are preparing to study in Nepal, share your program level, institution, nationality, and whether you are applying as a student, researcher, teacher, or dependent. Contact Immigration Nepal to discuss independent document-preparation assistance.
