Understand the permit process

Nepal designates certain places as restricted areas, and a trekking permit may be required for travel in a specified area. The Department of Immigration (DoI) is the competent authority for trekking permits. Its current Citizen Charter lists restricted-area trekking permits as a DoI service handled by its Agency Section, with an online application receipt and a defined agency document set. The charter includes items such as a trekking program schedule, trekkers' name list, agency guarantee and agreement, trekker application form with photo, and insurance documents for foreign nationals and Nepali staff. This is an agency application file checklist, not a complete personal checklist for every traveller.

For Upper Mustang, the Immigration Office in Korala specifically says foreign nationals apply online through a registered trekking agency portal and that a trekking guide is required. Do not assume that the same guide, group, agency, or solo-travel conditions apply in every restricted area. Confirm requirements for the precise area and itinerary with the DoI and an appropriately registered or licensed trekking agency before making travel arrangements.

What Immigration Nepal can help with

Immigration Nepal is a private administrative consultancy. We can explain the published process, organize information you provide, review documents for visible completeness against the current official instructions you share, and prepare questions for the relevant authority or authorized trekking agency. If coordination with an authorized party is needed, we can help you understand that handoff. We are not the Department of Immigration, Department of Tourism, a trekking agency, guide service, law firm, or permit issuer. We cannot file a permit as a substitute for a registered trekking agency where the rules require one.

A restricted-area permit is separate from other travel permissions that may apply. For example, official guidance about Upper Mustang identifies a trekking permit and other requirements for that area. Check whether a separate conservation-area permit, entry permission, or other document applies to your intended itinerary with the relevant authority. We do not arrange access, select or approve routes, provide safety or rescue services, or determine whether a particular person may enter an area.

Prepare information for a document-readiness review

Start with the exact destination and dates you are considering, plus any route or itinerary proposed by your authorized trekking agency. Share only the information needed for the review. The DoI charter lists a trekker application form with photograph and insurance documentation among the permit file materials; it also lists agency-specific records. Ask the agency which items it needs from you and how it will handle personal documents. Do not treat the charter as a traveller-only checklist or send original identity documents to us.

Official fee schedules are area-specific and may vary by location, season, and duration. The Department of Tourism's restricted-area list and the DoI's Citizen Charter do not present every fee entry identically. Confirm the current fee, calculation period, payment method, validity dates, and any route-specific conditions directly with the DoI or registered agency before paying. This page does not quote a universal rate or promise processing time, permit validity, access, or approval.

How assistance works

  1. Describe the proposed area. Share the destination, approximate dates, nationality, and the questions you want to resolve. We do not assess route safety or decide whether an area is accessible.
  2. Identify the correct official instructions. We help locate the published DoI and Department of Tourism information relevant to the named area and note where details require direct confirmation.
  3. Coordinate with the authorized agency. Where official rules require a registered trekking agency, the applicant must work with one. The agency confirms its authorization, the current application channel, and what traveller information it needs.
  4. Organize the supplied material. We can help arrange copies and check visible consistency against instructions you provide, while flagging missing or unclear items for the applicant or agency to resolve.
  5. Confirm and proceed through official channels. The agency submits where authorized, and the DoI decides the permit application. The competent authorities and authorized entities determine requirements, fees, validity, access, and all outcomes.

Common questions

Can Immigration Nepal issue or submit my trekking permit?

No. We are a private consultancy, not a permit issuer or registered trekking agency. The Department of Immigration issues permits, and its guidance requires applications for Upper Mustang to be made through a registered trekking agency. The responsible agency must handle any filing that rules reserve to it.

Can I travel alone or without a guide?

Requirements differ by area. The Korala Immigration Office says a trekking guide is required for Upper Mustang. We cannot extend that statement to every restricted area or confirm that an individual application is allowed. Ask the DoI and an authorized agency about the exact area, group, and guide rules for your itinerary.

What documents do I need?

The DoI's general charter lists both trekker-related materials and agency records, including a trekker application form with photo, insurance documents, itinerary, and agency paperwork. The required combination may depend on the destination and current instructions. Ask the authorized agency for the traveller-specific checklist and confirm it with the DoI.

What is the permit fee and how long is it valid?

Fees and validity depend on the area, season, and duration. Official publications do not present every entry identically, so confirm the current amount, validity period, payment instructions, and any extensions directly with the DoI or registered agency before payment. We cannot quote or guarantee an official charge or permit term.

Does this service include a guide, route, or rescue support?

No. We provide administrative information and document-readiness support only. We do not operate treks, supply guides, recommend or approve routes, arrange restricted-area access, or provide safety or rescue services.

Documents to prepare

  • The charter lists insurance documents for foreign nationals and Nepali staff; confirm whose insurance evidence is required for the specific application.
  • The charter lists a trekking program schedule and trekkers' name list as agency-file items; ask the authorized agency what itinerary information it needs from you.

Frequently asked questions

Can Immigration Nepal issue or submit my trekking permit?

No. We are a private administrative consultancy, not a permit issuer or registered trekking agency. The Department of Immigration issues permits, and its Upper Mustang guidance specifies application through a registered trekking agency. Any filing reserved to an agency must be handled by that authorized agency.

Can I trek alone or without a guide?

Do not assume one rule covers every restricted area. The Immigration Office in Korala says a guide is required for Upper Mustang. Confirm individual, group, and guide requirements for your exact destination with the Department of Immigration and an authorized agency.

Which documents should I prepare?

The DoI charter lists items such as a trekker application form with photograph, insurance documents, a trekking program schedule, and trekkers' name list, along with agency records. It is not a complete personal checklist for every area. Ask the authorized agency what you personally must provide and verify current instructions with the DoI.

What does a restricted-area trekking permit cost?

The official schedules list area-specific fees, and the Department of Immigration Citizen Charter and Department of Tourism route list do not present every entry identically. Confirm the current fee, duration calculation, payment method, and validity directly with the DoI or authorized agency before paying.

Does your service include trekking, guides, route planning, or rescue?

No. Immigration Nepal provides private published-process guidance, document readiness, and coordination only. It is not a trekking agency or guide service and does not provide route, access, safety, or rescue services.

General information only. Requirements depend on the facts of each case and can change, so confirm the current position before filing.
